Branching Out

I’ve been working on the blog code this weekend, and among the many features I’ve implemented is post tagging, which will enable me to do something I’ve wanted to do for a while: start blogging about other things than my transition. I’m not sure what; I’ll probably be posting a bit about my primary interests: web development, Internet culture and the fight against “intellectual property”. A few posts about things which really annoy me, primarily American politics, are probably unavoidable. Well, pretty much anything I feel like blogging about–although I will not let this blog devolve into an exercise in link whoring. If I have nothing original to add to the debate, I won’t post. That’s a promise.

If this unsettles you, don’t worry. Because of the aforementioned tagging system, you can still follow only my personal posts using the “bodil” tag, or even just my posts about transitioning by using the “transition” tag. If you prefer RSS, you can subscribe to the tag feeds from the tag pages.

I hope you’ll continue reading the full feed, though–I’ll still be posting a lot about myself and transgendered issues, and the other stuff is easy to spot and skip if it doesn’t interest you. It’s not exactly going to be high volume in any case, but hopefully this will let me post a little more frequently than the dismal twice-a-month I’m at currently.

On the off chance you’re curious, here are the new blog features I’ve implemented recently:

  • Post tagging, view by tags, RSS feeds by tags, thanks to django-tagging.
  • I threw the built-in comment system out in favour of Disqus. The old comments are gone, pending the implementation of an import feature on the Disqus side. They make an awesome product, but their feature turnaround isn’t too impressive.
  • Image database with Flickr integration and automatic attributions, as well as a pretty jQuery user interface you won’t get to see.
  • FriendFeed widget, with comments, to replace my sad old Twitter feed. I’ll reluctantly admit to being a bit inspired by Scoble on this one.
  • You probably won’t ever notice, but the whole site is now valid XHTML+RDFa, complete with semantic information, making me totally Web 3.0 hip.
  • Finally, I’ve taken the plunge and upgraded the site to run on the latest Django from SVN.
  • All this, and still not a single unit test. Fortunately, Django itself is more than agile enough to make up for my own lack of agility.
