No More Mistakes, Please

I just wanted to take a moment to tell you about what I’m afraid of these days. Next week, you see, the fate of the world is going to be decided by a bunch of people who, for the most part, couldn’t even point out the world on a map.
Yeah, the US presidential election. And yeah, that’s the level of confidence I have in the electorate. I know a lot of smart Americans–in fact, I’ve met a lot of Americans and the majority of them have been really smart people. Imagine the cognitive dissonance I have to deal with when I recall that Americans also gave us eight years of George Walker Bush. And look what you did to global political stability, look what you did to the global economy, and just how high is the civilian body count in your out-of-control “regime changes” right now? You’re about to put Hitler to shame. The USA’s public image is irreparably tarnished. Everybody hates you guys. No, seriously, you need to accept that: the only true ally you have left in the world is New Labour, and that’s not somewhere anyone would want to be.
So, please, for the love of God and anything left in the world that’s good, will you please get out there and vote on election day? And please, please, don’t vote for the crazy guy this time? Because this really is your last chance. If you screw this up, you screw up everything, and not just for your own country, but for the whole world. Please listen to those of us who don’t get a vote and don’t screw this up again.
You need to vote for the guy who’s not going to start any new wars. Vote for the guy who’s the most likely to do the right thing in Iraq and Afghanistan. For once in the history of American politics, can you please vote for the smart guy, and not the guy who wants you to believe Sarah Palin is competent to replace him if he should die in office? And please, get your priorities straight: it doesn’t matter which candidate is the most Christian (and if you believe John McCain is a good Christian, you must be really blind), it doesn’t matter what the candidates think about abortion, or who’s shook hands with the most domestic terrorists. The only thing that matters is the fate of the world, and you need to see that before it’s too late.
You need to vote for Barack Obama, because he’s the only sane choice left to you. And you need to get everyone you know with a vote to do so, because it’s not going to matter unless it’s a landslide. We’ve already seen the Republicans can turn a marginal defeat into an eight year victory. We’ve seen how they’re already working hard to pull the same thing off this time. Believe that these people will do to Obama in 2008 what they did to Gore in 2000, given half a chance. So get out there and give me that landslide.
Don’t let me wake up one day next week and find out you did something really stupid again. You ran out of mistakes in 2004. It’s time to get your act together.
Thank you for listening.
